West Ham United have thrown their support behind a new children’s book based on the life of late Hammers striker Dylan Tombides.

Vice-Chairman Karren Brady attended and spoke at the UK launch of Didge, a beautifully illustrated book written by Australian author Natasha Kate Evans, Managing Director of Dylan's namesake charity DT38, and illustrated by Anthony Princi.

Born in Perth, Tombides joined the Academy of Football as a schoolboy and looked set for a successful career at the highest level before his life was tragically cut short at the age of 20 by testicular cancer.

Despite his illness and the pain and suffering he endured, the young striker continued to train and play through his treatment, earning huge respect and adulation from all who knew him – and many more who did not.

Didge tells the story of a talented cub who excels at football before the entry of Sena the sneaky snake into his life changes it dramatically. Didge reflects Tombides’ story and is based on courage, persistence and love that aims to inspire children of all ages.

Speaking at the UK launch at the Orbit – just a well-struck Tombides shot from West Ham’s new London Stadium home on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park – the Vice-Chairman said Didge would capture the unique spirit Dylan showed during his own sadly shortened life.

“Not only is it a book in Dylan’s name and honour, but it is a book that captures his very special spirit,” said Baroness Brady. “The book conveys a precious life lesson to its young audience, while celebrating Dylan’s bright and brilliant football career.

“It aims to equip future generations with the strength to be resilient in the face of adversity and inspire its readers to pursue their dreams, to reach for the stars. What better way to honour Dylan’s memory. He would have been enormously proud, I’m sure.

"Over the past couple of years I’ve had the honour and privilege of getting to know the Tombides family and I cannot speak highly enough of all that they have done in tribute to their dear son. What they have accomplished in little over two years is remarkable and of tremendous credit to you all.”

Since Dylan’s passing in April 2014, his mother Tracy and wider family and friends – including many at West Ham United – have worked tirelessly on the DT38 Foundation, a charity founded to raise awareness of testicular cancer through education and opportunities. Proceeds from the sale of Didge will support the wonderful work of the DT38 Foundation.
