Classic match
Chelsea 0-1 West Ham United
Division Two
6 September 1980
An own-goal helped John Lyall's West Ham United beat London rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in a historic season for the Club. Graham Wilkins - the brother of the more famous England midfielder Ray - put through his own net to set the Hammers on their way to a sixth game without defeat.
West Ham's starting XI was something special for a Division Two side, as it contained no fewer than six players who would play for England during their careers in Phil Parkes, Frank Lampard, Alvin Martin, Alan Devonshire, Trevor Brooking and Paul Goddard, as well as the great Billy Bonds and Ray Stewart.
The Irons lost just four games in the league all season on their way to winning the Division Two title by 13 points ahead of second-placed Notts County, sending them back to the top flight after a three-year absence.
The Hammers also reached the final of the League Cup in 1980/81, but lost in a replay to Liverpool after a 1-1 draw at Wembley in the initial tie.
