Fulham 0-1 West Ham United
Premier League
23 October 2002
Late penalty drama gave the Hammers a much-needed win at Fulham on this day 13 years ago.
West Ham had endured a difficult start to the season and found themselves in 16th position when they travelled across London to take on the Cottagers.
It looked as though neither team would force the breakthrough in a tight game at Loftus Road, but that changed in the final minute when Jermain Defoe raced clear from Trevor Sinclair's through ball.
He looked set to shoot, but Zat Knight brought him down, giving away a penalty and earning a red card in the process.
Paolo Di Canio did the rest from the spot to give the Hammers the points, although by the end of the season they would suffer the pain of relegation - even though they amassed 42 points.
