West Ham United 2-0 Bournemouth
League Cup
13 October 1999
West Ham United booked their place in the fourth round of the League Cup with this 2-0 win over the Cherries on this day 16 years ago.
Owing to their involvement in the UEFA Cup, the Hammers were spared a second round tie, thereby entering the competition at this stage.
Fresh from a famous Paolo Di Canio inspired 2-1 win over Arsenal, Harry Redknapp's men welcomed Second Division Bournemouth to the Boleyn Ground.
Taking nothing for granted, Redknapp named a respectfully strong team, with Joe Cole, Di Canio, Frank Lampard, Trevor Sinclair and Paulo Wanchope all in the starting XI.
In front of over 22,000, the Hammers safely secured their passage through to the last 16, with Lampard and Marc Keller bagging the goals. Incidentally, for the latter, it was his one and only goal of the 1999/00 campaign.
Birmingham City awaited in the next round, where West Ham twice came from behind to prolong their cup run, courtesy of Cole's 89th-minute winner in a 3-2 success at St Andrews.
Their stint in the the competition ended, however, at the quarter-final stage, in a controversy-ridden tie with Aston Villa. As it turned out, the Villans would prevail 3-1 after extra time in a replay.
