Oscar Borg says his side are full of confidence ahead of their game with Reading
West Ham United winger Oscar Borg says his side are full of confidence going into their game with Reading U18 on Saturday 3 October.
The 18-year-old has been an integral part of the young Hammers team this season, starting all seven game and scoring once in the process.
Following superb 2-0 victories over heavyweights Chelsea and away at Southampton last weekend, Borg is targeting a hat-trick of wins when the Hammers host the Royals at Little Heath.
Speaking ahead of the match, Borg said: “Our last two performances have been excellent. Southampton always have a good academy, in the past we haven’t had the best results there so it was nice to win.
“They have a fantastic set up and great facilities and I think we used that to our advantage.”
Saturday’s opponents Reading are currently top of the Barclays U18 Premier League south division, scoring an impressive 21 goals in just seven games.
Despite the Royals’ rich vein of form, the Hammers have kept two consecutive clean sheets and the winger, who has also been played at left-back, said his side will not be overwrought: “Before that we beat Chelsea, they were unbeaten and are obviously a great team. It was great for confidence to beat a team like that and it gave everyone a boost.
“I think, as a team, we’ve been a lot more organised. Everyone is understanding their own roles but also understanding each other’s role which is massively important.
“Everyone is really pleased with our recent results and enjoying training. Hopefully we can maintain that level and get a few more wins under our belt.”
The winger, who scored four goals and contributed five assists last term, has picked up from where he left off as he netted against rivals Tottenham Hotspur to earn a valuable draw.
“If I carry on playing as a winger I’d like to get a few more goals. As a team we need to carry on winning and progressing together. I’d like to play for the 21s more, we trained with them today which is a great incentive.
“There’s a great intensity about the training with the U21s. Terry helps that a lot, but there’s also a lot of leadership from the more established U21 players we’ve got here.”
The U18s host Reading FC U18s at Little Heath on Saturday 3 October, kick off is 11am and admission is FREE.
