Frank McAvennie is today celebrating his 56th birthday.
The Scottish striker started the first of two spells at the Boleyn Ground in style after signing from St Mirren in the summer of 1985, helping the Boys of 86 secure the Club's highest ever finish of third in the top flight.
Originally signed as an attacking midfielder, an injury to Paul Goddard in the opening game pushed him up front and McAvennie formed a strong partnership with Tony Cottee.
He notched 26 league goals - a tally only bettered by Everton's Gary Lineker in Division One that season - but following a less successful second season, he moved back north of the border to join Celtic in October 1987.
Less than two years later he was back with the Hammers, and although he suffered a broken leg at the start of the 1989/90 campaign, he helped the Club win promotion back to the top flight the following year.
In all he scored 60 goals for the Hammers in 190 games, and later turned out for Aston Villa, Cliftonville, South China, Swindon Town, Airdrieonians and Falkirk before ending his career where it all began - at St Mirren.

Goals from Marc Keller and John Hartson ensured their good form would continue as the Hammers left Pride Park with all three points.
They moved up to second a week later with victory over Tottenham Hotspur and although that would prove to be the season's high point, Harry Redknapp's men never dropped below ninth for the rest of the campaign.
