West Ham United players pick their favourite moment of a rollercoaster 2014/15 season
Home victories over Liverpool and Manchester City got the vote for the Moment of the Season from West Ham United’s players.
When asked to pick their favourite occasion of 2014/15, many Hammers stars opted for the outstanding Boleyn Ground wins over two of the Barclays Premier League’s leading lights back in the autumn.
West Ham produced an outstanding opening half of the season, with the home successes over the Reds and the Citizens just two of a number of eye-catching results achieved by the men in Claret and Blue.
In the first of series of revealing retrospective West Ham TV features looking back on the season gone by, the squad reveal their favourite memory from a rollercoaster campaign.
“For me, my highlight was the game against Manchester City, which was a big moment for me and we won 2-1,” smiled match-winner Diafra Sakho, who headed past Joe Hart to complete a memorable victory over the reigning champions. “For me, it was very important for the players and for West Ham fans.”
Alex Song and Winston Reid also pointed to the Manchester City victory as one of two standout moments from 2014/15, with the 3-1 home success over Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool taking equal billing.
“For me, it was not just one but all the big games we played at home,” Song enthused. “The way we played against Man City and Liverpool and the fighting spirit we showed to win the game was unbelievable. They were fantastic moments for me.”
“I don’t have just one moment in particular, but in general the first couple of months and the way we started off the season was really good,” agreed Reid.
Other players picked more personal moments as their highlights, with Aaron Cresswell and Andy Carroll recalling their goals against Newcastle United and Swansea City as their own favourites.
“My best moment was when I scored against Newcastle,” said Cresswell. “I’ve dreamt about it since I was a little boy, not only to play in the Premier League but to score in the Premier League.”
“For me, it was my goal against Swansea [at the Liberty Stadium in January],” Carroll added. “It was a decent effort, if I do say so myself! I didn’t play many games or score many goals, but if I had to pick a highlight, that was my one.”
Captain Kevin Nolan, in contrast, paid tribute to the likes of Sakho, Cresswell, Song, Cheikhou Kouyate, Carl Jenkinson and Enner Valencia, whose ability to settle quickly into life at West Ham enabled the Club to make such a strong start to the campaign.
“For me, it’s been watching the boys adapt – a lot of the boys who have come and are new have settled so well and had fantastic season” said the No4.
