The away side summoned a response in the second half though and Bobby Zamora brought them level when he powered a header past Thomas Sorensen after 51 minutes.
A winner arrived through Marlon Harewood as the striker converted a penalty after Mark Delaney had been adjudged to have handled Hayden Mullins' shot. Harewood sent Sorensen the wrong way from the spot to give the Hammers all three points.

The Hammers were in the midst of a hectic season when they travelled to the Midlands to play Aston Villa in 1966.

A 5-0 defeat to Leeds United just two days earlier did little to affect the visitors as goals from John Sissons and Geoff Hurst saw them get back to winning ways.

31 March 1965
West Ham United racked up three straight wins as they overcame Villa in a five-goal thriller 49 years ago.
Johnny Byrne had scored in a 3-0 win in the reverse fixture earlier in the season and the striker was on target once again to help his side to another victory.

The Villans would get their revenge exactly a month later as they knocked the Hammers out of the League Cup, although West Ham again triumphed in the reverse league fixture, scoring a 2-0 win.

Vic Watson scored twice with a goal each for Stanley Earle, Joseph Johnson and Jimmy Ruffell on another goal fest for the Hammers.
