Hammers to host German giants

Werder Bremen will visit the Boleyn Ground for West Ham United’s final pre-season match on Sunday 2 August

West Ham United are pleased to confirm that German Bundesliga side Werder Bremen will visit the Boleyn Ground on Sunday 2 August.

Viktor Skrypnyk’s side will provide the opposition for the climax of the Hammers’ pre-season schedule, providing a strong challenge for Slaven Bilic’s squad ahead of the start of the 2015/16 Barclays Premier League campaign.

West Ham kick-off the league season with a trip to Arsenal the following weekend and the new manager will be keen for his first-team players to gain valuable match-time when they host Werder at 3pm.
Die Werderaner are one of Germany’s most famous and historic clubs, having been formed in 1899, won the Bundesliga title four times and lifted the German Cup on six occasions.

Ukrainian Skrypnyk led Werder to tenth in the Bundesliga last season and has put together a talented multi-national squad of players that includes Germany midfielder Clemens Fritz, Bosnia winger Izet Hajrovic, Austria wideman and reigning player of the year Zlatko Junuzovic, Czech Republic full-back Theodor Gebre Selassie, Argentina striker Franco Di Santo and DR Congo pair Assani Lukimaya and Cedric Makiadi.

The fixture will mark the second time West Ham have faced Werder in the Club’s history, the only previous meeting taking place at the Weserstadion on 14 August 1984. The German club ran out 2-1 winners on that occasion.

The pair were scheduled to clash in a pre-season match at the Thermenstadion in Bad Waltersdorf, Austria, on 18 July 2009, only for the match to be postponed due to a heavily waterlogged pitch.

Amazingly, Werder’s visit will be first to east London by a German club since 14 April 1976 – the famous night when West Ham roared back to defeat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-1 to reach the European Cup Winners’ Cup final 5-4 on aggregate.

Tickets are on sale now to Season Ticket Holders and will go on General Sale from 9am on Thursday 2 July, with advance prices of £20 for Adults, Under-21s and Over-65s and £10 for Under-16s.
Matchday ticket prices have been set as £25 for Adults, Under-21s and Over-65s and £15 for Under-16s.

Seats are available online or by telephone or by calling in person at the Betway Stand Ticket Office ahead of the UEFA Europa League first qualifying round first leg tie with FC Lusitans on 2 July.
