Finland 1-4 England
International Friendly
3 June 1982

England warmed up for the 1982 World Cup by travelling to Finland for a pre-tournament friendly on this date in the calendar, in which West Ham defender Alvin Martin won his fourth cap for the Three Lions.

The visitors led 2-0 at the break in Helsinki, winning 4-1 by the contest's end thanks to braces from both Paul Marriner and Bryan Robson.

England's World Cup campaign got underway 13 days later, but Martin did not make the final squad due to injury, having to wait until four years later to appear at a finals.

The scouser would win 17 caps in all for his country during a distinguished career which yielded 469 league appearances for West Ham.
