West Ham United players reveal their most entertaining moment of the 2014/15 season
While football is a serious business, West Ham United players have also found time for some more light-hearted moments over the past season.
Whether it was singing and dancing in fancy dress, making a complete hash of golf trick-shots or organising a delivery of chewing gum for a teammate with (alleged) bad breath, the laughs were never too far away for the Hammers.
Perhaps the funniest moment of a rollercoaster season came in March, when Mark Noble demolished a pole during The Golf Trick Shot Boys’ visit to Chadwell Heath.
“We had a couple of golf trick-shot lads come in and they let a few of the players have a go and they were hitting the ball from about a metre up in the air on a pole,” Andy Carroll told West Ham TV. “They asked a couple of the lads to do it and Nobes stepped up, thinking he is a golfer, and he nearly broke the club in half!”
Another moment to raise a smile came in February, when Alex Song, Kevin Nolan, Mark Noble, Stewart Downing and Cheikhou Kouyate donned wigs and costumes for a music session with singer-songwriter Harper from ICU Label.
“I think the experience of singing and dancing with all the players was a funny thing and I enjoyed doing it,” said Song, who took part in the session in aid of the NSPCC and National Autistic Society. “I saw how difficult it must be for the professional people to have to do it, but for me it was a funny experience and I enjoyed doing it.”
The comedy was not just restricted to the training ground, however, as James Tomkins found reason to laugh when recalling a dressing ground discussion with fellow defender Carl Jenkinson – a man for whom a smile is never far from his face.
“I think it was against Chelsea and me and Jenks were having a little argument at half-time,” Tomkins explained. “He was talking about covering a player and I was telling him to talk to me – the sort of thing that happens all the time when you’re trying to make the best of yourself.
“He was arguing with me, but we ended up making up straight away, but thinking back it was quite funny to argue with Jenks because it’s hard to take him seriously!”
Perhaps Jenkinson was in fact more upset with the smell emanating from Tomkins’ mouth, rather than his defensive contribution, if a recent delivery to Chadwell Heath is anything to go by.
A box full of chewing gum arrived with the No5’s name on it, with a number of players taking to social media to point out that Tomkins would benefit from adding the mints to his breakfast bowl!
“Wrigley Extra chewing gum sent him a box of extra minty fresh stuff to keep his breath under wraps for a couple of months!” laughed Mark Noble.
