Hailing from the north east, he played for Middlesbrough, Craighead United (in three spells) and Newcastle United before heading south.
Stints at Doncaster Rovers, Rochdale and Port Vale followed before he pitched up at the Boleyn Ground in May 1933 at the age of 28.
He remained in east London for three seasons, although he was only a regular for the first of those, notching eight goals in 22 games.
In all, he would score ten times in claret and blue, having appeared in 28 matches.
