Hammers Advent Calendar - Day 19

West Ham United helped spread some welcome Christmas cheer during a festive visit to Newham University Hospital this week.

First teamers Andy Carroll, James Tomkins, Mauro Zarate and Nikica Jelavic were on hand to meet young patients, family members and staff.

The group handed out Hammers goodies before posing for dozens of photographs. For Tomkins, he was glad for the opportunity to put smiles on young faces as Christmas approaches.

“It’s nice for us to be able to give back to the community, especially at this time of year,” he said.

“Hopefully the kids will be able to get home for Christmas, which is the main thing, and be able to spend it with their families.

“For us it's a nice touch to be able to come here, give our some gifts and put a smile on their face.

“It puts life into perspective when you see young kids in hospital and their families just wanting to get them home.

“Giving back to the community is very important to us, and Newham Hospital is very local to Upton Park so it's been great to meet some West Ham fans.”

Play Specialist on Forrest Ward Hamera Elabi said she and her staff were delighted to welcome the Hammers to Newham University Hospital.

“The visit was just the lift the children needed and really cheered everyone up. It's always mayhem when the team come as many of the children are huge fans of their local club - as well as the staff!

“The team are fantastic sports coming back year after year to help make being in hospital over Christmas enjoyable for the children. Thank you!”
