Classic match
West Ham United 3-2 Sunderland
Division One
13 December 2003
The Hammers came back from two goals down to defeat Saturday's opponents Sunderland on this day twelve years ago.
Alan Pardew's men went into this game sixth in the Championship whilst the Black Cats were also in promotion contention.
At half-time it looked as though Sunderland would be strengthening their promotion credentials as goals from Jason McAteer and John Oster put them in a commanding position.
But Jermain Defoe hit back with a double of his own before the hour mark to level the game up, then Ian Pearce struck a late winner to leave Sunderland deflated.
Both teams would end the campaign in the Play-Off places, and both would remain in the second tier for another year, with Sunderland losing to Crystal Palace in the semi-final, before the Eagles defeated West Ham at the Millennium Stadium.
