Green Street Goals!

Steve Lomas was more likely to thunder into a tackle than score a goal, but the combative midfielder did hit the net 13 times during his eight years with West Ham United.

The flame-haired Northern Irishman’s favourite came in the famous goalfest against Manchester United at the Boleyn Ground on 16 March 2002, which ended 5-3 in the Red Devils’ favour.

Lomas, who was returning to action after a knee injury, outjumped Mikael Silvestre and powered his header past Fabien Barthez from new signing Vladimir Labant’s left-wing cross.

The captain’s goal came just eight minutes in and Lomas celebrated in style, ripping off his shirt and running off towards the West Stand. Despite further strikes from Frederic Kanoute and Jermain Defoe, however, two goals from David Beckham and one each from Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer secured a dramatic victory for Sir Alex Ferguson’s men.

“I think in my first five years here, it was a very tough place to come and even the top teams didn’t like coming here,” recalled Lomas, when asked to recount his favourite Green Street Goal for West Ham TV.

“It would be hard to pick but when I’m asked about goals, it has to be the header against Manchester United. I’d been out for about a month with a knee injury, so to come back and get a goal against Man United was great.”
