Classic match
West Ham United 2-2 Chelsea
Division One
22 August 1970
22 August has been a fruitful day in West Ham United history, with the Hammers having lost only three of the 12 matches contested on this date.
One of the positive results came in entertaining circumstances against Chelsea in the third game of the 1970/71 season, with West Ham seeking their first win.
The meeting with Chelsea was the Hammers' third consecutive derby, following matches against Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, and it looked for a while that West Ham would break their winning duck.
An eleventh minute goal from Bobby Howe was quickly added to another from Geoff Hurst and the Hammers were 2-0 up.
But Chelsea came roaring back after the break through Keith Weller to ensure the spoils would be shared.
