Classic match

Crewe Alexandra 2-3 West Ham United
Championship
21 August 2004

West Ham United recorded a thrilling 3-2 win over Crewe Alexandra on this day eleven years ago.

Having won only one of their opening three Championship fixtures, Alan Pardew's side were in need of a win and made the perfect start by roaring into a 3-0 lead by the half-hour mark.

Teddy Sheringham notched twice before Rufus Brevett made it 3-0 to leave the visitors in a commanding position,

However, they were made to sweat before going on to take the points as future Hammer Dean Ashton got on the scoresheet twice for Crewe.

West Ham had done enough, however, to take the victory and move up to seventh in the early table.
