West Ham United 1-0 Coventry City
Division One
14 August 1972
The Hammers welcomed Coventry City to the Boleyn Ground for their second league fixture of the 1972/73 season, just two days after kicking-off with a 0-0 draw at West Bromwich Albion.
West Ham had made a solid start with a clean sheet at the Hawthorns, and another defensive shutout paved the way for the two-point haul which took them to the top of the league.
Clyde Best notched the only goal of the game to send most of the 27,498 crowd home happy, as Ron Greenwood's men showed plenty of early promise.
Another victory over Leicester City followed in the next match, and West Ham continued to impress throughout the campaign en route to a sixth-place finish.
