Classic match
West Ham United 2-0 Tottenham Hotspur
25 April 1966
Division One
Ron Greenwood's West Ham bagged the derby-day honours against Tottenham Hotspur on this day in 1966. The Hammers' hero of the hour was Johnny 'Budgie' Byrne, who continued his fine run of form in front of goal with a brace here.
Byrne had previously scored in each of his last three starts, including in the reverse fixture, a 4-1 win at White Hart Lane just 17 days earlier.
Incidentally, Byrne was enjoying much of his success from the penalty spot, having dispatched a spot-kick last time out against Arsenal. On this occasion, he twice stepped up from 12 yards, converting both, and scored yet another penalty in a 3-2 home win over Manchester United five days thereafter.
Byrne ended the campaign with 17 goals in 37 starts, while Greenwood's men topped the bottom half of the table come the final reckoning, finishing 12th in the top tier.
