Preview - Manchester City

In brief

West Ham United travel to Manchester to play current Premier League champions Manchester City in the lunchtime kick off on Sunday.

Sam Allardyce’s team, who are currently ninth in the league with 43 points from their 32 games, are looking to complete the double over Manuel Pellegrini’s men having beaten the Citizens 2-1 in October.

Sunday’s opponents, City are looking to bounce back from the 4-2 defeat to rivals Manchester United, their fourth consecutive away defeat.

Having spent the majority of the season in second place, the Sky Blues have slipped to fourth, leading to speculation about Pellegrini’s future.

Who are they?

Manchester City were formed in 1880 as St Mark's (West Gordon), eventually taking on their current name in 1894.

They have played at the Etihad Stadium since 2003, having previously turned out at Maine Road from 1923. Their most successful period until recent times came in the late 1960s and early 1970s when they won the league, FA Cup, League Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup.

More recently, they have won the Barclays Premier League twice in the last three years, as well as the FA Cup and Capital One Cup.

Team news

Manchester City

The Sky Blues will be without their captain Vincent Kompany who picked up a thigh injury in the Manchester Derby.

Gael Clichy and James Milner also picked up injuries last weekend and are unavailable.

Wilfired Bony (ankle) is out while Steven Jovetic faces a race against time to be fit for Sunday.

West Ham United

The Hammers are boosted by the return of Enner Valencia who has trained with the squad over the last few days having recovered from a foot injury sustained against Stoke.

However they will have to make do without top goal scorer Diafra Sakho due to a thigh injury.

James Tomkins (shoulder) and Andy Carroll (knee) are both making steady progress in their recoveries from injury.

Referee

Sunday’s match referee will be Anthony Taylor. The Cheshire based referee made his Premier League debut in 2010 and has gone on to officiate 100 matches, issuing 334 yellow and 21 red cards.

Sunday will be the second time that Taylor has taken charge of a West Ham game this season, having overseen the Hammers' 2-0 win over Queens Park Rangers in October.

The assistant referees are Darren Cann and Stephen Child, Richard Madley is the Fourth Official.

One to watch

Manchester City

Spanish midfielder David Silva has been one of City’s best players in recent years. The 29-year-old has been in fine form this season, scoring 13 goals including a terrific solo effort at the Boleyn Ground in October.

West Ham United

Having netted his second goal of the season last weekend with an emphatic free kick, Aaron Cresswell has strengthened his chances of winning the coveted Hammer of the Year award.

Since joining from Championship outfit Ipswich Town, Cresswell has excelled in his first season in east London, making the left-back position his own having played every minute of the Hammers' league campaign.
