In brief

West Ham United welcome last season's Barclays Premier League runners-up Liverpool to the Boleyn Ground on Saturday evening, with Sam Allardyce's men looking for their first home points of the campaign.

Following defeats by Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton in E13, the Hammers will hope to bring their form on the road to their own patch, with all four of the points gained this season so far coming on the road.

The most recent away game ended in a 2-2 draw at Hull City, as Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho hit the target to cancel out efforts from Abel Hernandez and Mohamed Diame.

Liverpool, meanwhile, left it late to defeat Bulgarian side Ludogorets in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday. Mario Balotelli put the Reds in front on 82 minutes, but it took a Steven Gerrard penalty to win it at the death after the visitors equalised late on.

In the league, Brendan Rodgers men have won two and lost two, defeating Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur, but losing out to Manchester City and Aston Villa.

Who are they?

Formed in 1892, Liverpool are one of English football's most-successful clubs.

Only Manchester United hold more league titles than the Reds' total of 18, while only Real Madrid and AC Milan have won the UEFA Champions League or European Cup more often than their total of five.

Runners-up last term as they chased their first English title in 24 years, the glory days appear to be returning to Anfield under Rodgers. They are also seven-time FA Cup winners, eight-time League Cup winners and three-time UEFA Cup champions.

Team news

West Ham United

Big Sam will have the same squad to choose from as was at his disposal at Hull City on Monday. That means Andy Carroll (ankle), Matt Jarvis (thigh), Joey O'Brien (knee) and Kevin Nolan (shoulder) are all sidelined.

Morgan Amalfitano, Alex Song and Carl Jenkinson could make their home debuts after playing their first games for the Club at Hull on Monday.

Liverpool

Defender Martin Skrtel returns to ther Reds squad after overcoming a knee injury, but Daniel Sturridge is likely to be out with a thigh problem suffered on international duty with England earlier this month.

Jon Flanagan is also absent after undergoing knee surgery recently, while ex-Hammer Glen Johnson is a doubt due to a thigh injury. Wales midfielder Joe Allen is ruled out after suffering a knee injury while on international duty with Wales.

Referee

The man in the middle for Saturday afternoon's game will be Craig Pawson. 35-year-old Pawson last refereed the Hammers in March, when he took the whistle for the 3-1 defeat at Stoke City.

The official has been a referee since 1993, working his way up to the Football League where he began refereeing in the 2008/09 campaign.

Peter Kirkup and Darren Cann will assist Pawson, while Phil Dowd will be the fourth official.

One to watch

West Ham United

Enner Valencia announced his arrival on the Hammers scene in style on Monday with a stunning goal at Hull City - following his high-profile summer move from Mexican club Pachuca.

The Ecuador striker belted an unstoppable shot past Tigers keeper Allan McGregor to level the game at 1-1 on 50 minutes. West Ham would go on to draw 2-2, with Valencia coming so close to winning it at the death when he rose magnificently at the far post to head for goal, only for the ball to bounce up off Michael Dawson and onto the crossbar.

He is likely to start again on Saturday with West Ham hoping for more of the same from their summer signing.

As a team, the Hammers have provided a prolific attacking threat in the first four games of the campaign. Only Arsenal, Southampton and Chelsea have registered more shots on target than West Ham this season. It been quite a turnaround from last term, when the Hammers produced the fewest shots on target in the league.

Liverpool

Liverpool's marquee summer signing Mario Balotelli also got off the mark for his new club in midweek, stabbing home against Bulgarian champions Ludogorets to help the Reds to a 2-1 UEFA Champions League group-stage victory.

The 24-year-old Italy forward signed for Brendan Rodgers' side from AC Milan last month, a year-and-a-half after leaving Manchester City for the San Siro.

A true maverick, Balotelli is a born entertainer and is sure to give the West Ham defenders a headache, if selected, on Saturday.
