Ladies lose to Charlton

West Ham United Ladies crashed out out of the Ryman Women's Cup with a 3-1 home defeat to Charlton Athletic on Thursday evening.

The visitors lead 2-0 at the break through Kit Graham's impressive goal after 35 minutes, before Sam Pittuck doubled the Addicks' lead from the penalty spot on the stroke of half time.

A mistake from away goalkeeper Alex Baker allowed Hammers striker Vicky Kinsman (pictured) to half the deficit and bring the hosts back into the game, although Pittuck popped up shortly after to head in her second of the game and take the Addicks through to the next round.

Dicks named an unchanged side from the team that knocked Tottenham Hotspur Ladies out of the Capital Women's Cup at the weekend. Striker Lily Mellors retained her place in the starting eleven alongside Kinsman, with Emma Sherwood still missing through injury.

Prior to kick off, both sides took part in a minute's applause in memory of the late Katie Sheppard, who featured for both teams during her short playing career before her tragic death back in July. The players from West Ham and Charlton also sported black armbands in memory of their former friend and team mate.

Charlton came out strongly and called West Ham keeper Nikita Runnacles into action with the first real chance of the game. The former Millwall stopper did extremely well to turn Amy Howlett's shot round the post.

The hosts began to raise their performance and get themselves back into the game shortly after, with Kelley Blanchflower, Sarah McCrea and Mellors all firing shots into the arms of former Hammers keeper Baker.

On 35 minutes, Charlton went ahead when Graham forced a mistake out of Vicky King at the back before firing an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net.

The visitors doubled their lead in the final seconds of the first half when Olivia Cole was taken down in the box by Runnacles, allowing Pittuck to step forward and convert from the spot.

After half time, West Ham looked stronger and determined to turn this game around to earn a result. McCrea continued to cause problems to the Addicks full backs whilst Kinsman used her height and strength to maintain possession of the ball in the final third.

It was Kinsman who netted to bring West Ham back into this tie, pouncing onto a dropped ball on the edge of the penalty area to tap into the waiting net.

The tie was settled in the final ten minutes as Howlett crossed perfectly for Pittuck to head into the back of the net.

West Ham head north for their next FA Women's Premier League South fixture at Copsewood Coventry Ladies on Sunday 26 October at 2pm.
