Arthur Banner

A strong Yorkshire-born full-back, Arthur Banner (pictured) started his career with Doncaster Rovers before joining West Ham United in 1938. However, the outbreak of World War Two restricted him to just one Division Two appearance prior to hostilities breaking out - a 2-0 win at Southampton on 22 April 1939.
Banner played 14 times for the Hammers during the war, spending much of his time serving in the Essex Regiment and the Royal Artillery and rising to the rank of sergeant.
After returning to Division Two duty in the third match of the 1946/47 season at home to Leicester City, Banner would go on to make a total of 27 senior appearances for the Hammers before departing for Leyton Orient in 1948.
He later became player-manager of Sittingbourne and coached Ilford to the FA Amateur Cup final in 1958. Banner passed away in Thorpe Bay, Essex, at the age of 61 in April 1980.

Stan Johns
Born: 28 June 1924, Liverpool, England

Signed on 17 August 1950, 26-year-old forward Stan Johns had attracted the attention of Merseyside giants Liverpool and Everton before opting to join West Ham United.
The striker made a fine start to his Hammers career, scoring on his debut in a 2-1 Division Two defeat by Cardiff City at Ninian Park on 4 September 1950. Johns found the net on his second appearance, too, in a 3-1 defeat at Blackburn Rovers five days later.
That would be as good as it got, however, as Johns would fail to score in four subsequent matches. Very little is known about where Johns played after West Ham, but he passed away in 1985.
