All at West Ham United were deeply saddened on Friday to learn of the death of Malcolm Allison at the age of 83.
The former defender served the club to distinction between 1950/51 and 1957/58, playing 255 games in all competitions, before a hugely successful coaching career.
The foundations were set for his future achievements during his time at the Boleyn Ground. Allison was a leading figure under manager Ted Fenton in the establishment of the Academy principles throughout the club.
David Gold, West Ham United Chairman, said: "The club offer our sincere condolences to his family and friends. He was a great footballing man that I admired as a youngster. He was one of those great characters in football. In a way, he was at the beginning of big personalities in football.
"I have great memories of that time. It was a great side under Ted Fenton and it all really started then. It was that philosophy that started this amazing West Ham way."
