Dazzler drops in

Former Essex and England cricket star Darren 'Dazzler' Gough has predicted big things for the nation's footballers at the forthcoming FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

The 39-year-old, who has swapped the cricket pitch for the radio studio to work for talkSPORT, twice toured the host nation with the England Test side, losing on both occasions.

This summer, the former schoolboy footballer believes Fabio Capello's men have a chance of bringing home the trophy - especially if he picks them to do so.

"You never know. It would be amazing if it did happen," he told WHUTV. "I had England down to win the World Twenty20 and had them to beat Australia in the final and I also picked the IPL winners in cricket, so my predictions are going pretty well. At football, although it's not my main sport, I'll have a think about it and I think England can reach the semis and if we do, anything can happen."

Although Gough is best known for his heroics as a fast bowler for Yorkshire, Essex and England, he could easily have followed a different sporting path as a youngster.

The Strictly Come Dancing winner had trials with two Football League clubs as a child and recently demonstrated his talents during a special charity match at the Boleyn Ground organised by talkSPORT colleague and West Ham United fan Ian 'Moose' Abrahams.

"I got to the final of Super Skills back in 1985 when I played in the semi-final at Villa Park. I started at Barnsley and went to Rotherham United and ended up playing cricket for England, so it was a bit of a weird journey.

"Football has always been my first love and that's why I've gone back to working in football now. I've got the World Cup coming up next month so I can't wait.

"I'm going out on 8 June and I'm going to be at the games, so it's going to be fantastic. I'll be at England against the USA and then I'm going to swap it around and try to watch some other teams.

"I'm working out there, but I get the weekends off to try and watch some football. I'm hoping to catch Brazil and Argentina - I want to see Lionel Messi play seeing as I seem to slaughter him every week on talkSPORT - and also Australia due to the cricket connection."
