Hammers held in cup opener

QPR Ladies 1-1 West Ham United Ladies

It was a case of so near but so far as West Ham United began their FA Tesco Women's Premier League Cup campaign with a draw.

Becky Merrit had put the Hammers on their way with a goal early in the second half but the hopes of a winning start to the group were denied when Rangers grabbed a controversial equaliser three minutes into added time. The visitors were sure the ball had been handled in the lead up to the equaliser but the referee waved away the appeals.

It was an unlucky day all round with the Hammers having to play the closing stages with just ten players after Jo Woodgates suffered a suspected dislocated shoulder after Julia Setford had made all three substitutions. There was better news for the reserves, who concluded their pre-season programme with a 2-0 defeat of Millwall at Flanders Fields.

A magnifcent strike from Kayleigh Xidhas sent the Hammers into the break a goal to the good and Emma Harrison notched a second on 83 minutes.
