Da Costa stakes his claim

Manuel da Costa was looking on the bright side after Sunday's home loss to Everton.

West Ham United's unlucky 2-1 reverse against the Merseysiders ended a promising run of three games without defeat but Da Costa stressed that the manner of the team's performance should ensure no heads drop in the dressing room.

The Portuguese defender said: "We played very, very well, we have confidence in ourselves but we were missing a little bit of luck. Everton had two shots on goal but managed to win the game.

"We performed well as a team and had chances to score but couldn't take them. We are showing some good consistency and we have to keep it going when everyone gets back together again after the international break."

Da Costa made only his second start at the Boleyn Ground on Sunday following his summer arrival from Fiorentina.

Yet the 23-year-old has already run virtually the full gamut of emotions with the Upton Park crowd - the frustration of Sunday's defeat following the high of last Wednesday's last-gasp victory over Aston Villa, when he went home with many hailing him as the man of the match.

Da Costa said: "It was great to get the win against Villa and for me it was important to have a good game. It was an important way to start for me here at Upton Park. I was happy for myself and for the team that we got the victory against Villa.

"I feel I'm gradually getting better and getting used to the English game and I want to keep working hard and progressing," he added.
