Spence helps England progress

Jordan Spence played a part as England qualified for the UEFA European Under-19 Championship finals in Ukraine with a 2-1 win against Scotland in Sheffield.

The versatile West Ham United defender came off the bench for the last 15 minutes, playing at right-back for Brian Eastick's Young Lions in a mini-tournament decider they only needed to draw to make sure of a place at the prestigious summer showpiece. They finished with a 100 per cent record after goals from Nile Ranger and Victor Moses did the damage at Bramall Lane on Monday night.

James Tomkins and Freddie Sears represented England at last year's finals, when club-mate Savio, representing Germany, was named player of the  tournament.

Spence, who has worn the armband at every youth level up to the U19s, had previously captained England to a 2-0 success against Bosnia-Herzeogvina in their first Elite round mini-tournament fixture last Wednesday before sitting out the 4-1 victory against Slovakia on Friday.
