Jordan Spence's good week continued as Leyton Orient won on Saturday for only the third time at home this season while Lee Bowyer was another loanee to taste success.
England Under-19 defender Spence picked up another international cap on Tuesday night, having last weekend helped Orient to a precious goalless draw at Tranmere Rovers. He kept up his fine form with a good display at centre-back as the east London club won 2-1 against visiting Crewe Alexandra.
Still only 18, Spence is highly regarded at the Boleyn Ground and remains a familiar sight around the club despite his loan at the Matchroom Stadium until the end of the season. Fellow academy graduate Joe Widdowson could not help Grimsby Town avoid a 2-1 home defeat by Bury to remain in trouble at the wrong end of the League Two table.
Elsewhere on Saturday, Lee Bowyer helped Birmingham City to a 2-0 home win against Nottingham Forest that boosted their chances of Premier League promotion as Nigel Quashie played an hour as table-toppng Wolves, without Kyel Reid, went down 1-0 at Burnley. Also in the Championship, Jimmy Walker's Colchester United lost 2-0 at his former club Walsall.
On Sunday in Spain, Julien Faubert was denied his second loan appearance for Real Madrid away to Sporting Gijon, with the French winger left on the bench in the 4-0 away win. whufc.com will also have a full update to come on the Under-18s after they drew 1-1 at Norwich City on Saturday to make it six games unbeaten.
