Ljungberg and Sweden lose late

Freddie Ljungberg saw a last-gasp goal from David Villa consign Sweden to a 2-1 defeat in their second game at the Euro 2008 finals.

The West Ham United midfielder's national team had almost done enough to earn a draw against their much-fancied opponents until Valencia striker Villa struck deep into added time for a 2-1 victory. Ljungberg again played a full 90 minutes and also had a chance of his own to score just before the late winner at the other end. Fernando Torres had opened the scoring for Spain in the first half before Zlatan Ibrahmovic had levelled matters. Sweden's hopes of progressing to the quarter-finals now rest with their match against Russia on Wednesday night.

Elsewhere on Saturday, John Pantsil was also on the losing side as Ghana went down 2-0 in Gabon in their latest qualifier for the 2010 World Cup. Pantsil played a full part in a result which means the Black Stars still head their section but will need to return to winning ways when Gabon travel to Accra on Sunday week. Finally, Lucas Neill has been buoyed by Australia's 3-1 defeat of Qatar in Doha that means the Socceroos have made it to the second stage of Asian qualifying for the 2010 World Cup before their final group game against China in Sydney next week. Two goals from Brett Emerton and another from Harry Kewell were enough to ensure victory.
