WHU Learning Zone Presentation

The West Ham United Learning Zone held their Presentation Evening in the Castle Suite at the Boleyn Ground recently to celebrate the achievement of the students who attended the 'Playing For Success' programme and the Learning Zones Heritage Project Family learning Programme.

More than 350 pupils, parents and teachers came to celebrate their achievement. Prizes were awarded for key skills and citizenship and to those who made the most effort and achievement.

Dee, Junior and The General from the Newham Generals Joga Bonitio Football Team, who will be representing the UK as National Champions in Brazil during August, gave out the prizes.Prizes consisted of bags and stationary and signed West Ham United Shirts.

Family Learning sessions have also been running during the daytime at the Learning Zone, funded by Learning Community Services, and their achievements were also celebrated. The Players were interviewed by the 'PfS' graduates and the event was hosted by student council members.

The West Ham United Learning Zone is part of a Government led initiative called 'Playing for Success'. This initiative was set up in 1997 to help improve standards of Numeracy, Literacy and ICT and increase pupil motivation to learn by raising pupil self confidence and self esteem.

Over the past year through PfS alone, the Learning Zone has given approximately 1600 Primary and Secondary Pupils and families from different schools in Newham sessions to improve their standards of Numeracy, Literacy, ICT and Key Skills.

As well as PfS, our centre has become involved in running educational programmes for schools, parents and teachers in the local community. For more information on the programme, contact Jamie McGachy at the West Ham United Learning Zone on 020 8586 8063.
