Bobby Having A Ball

It was a case of 'home sweet home' for Bobby Zamora after he signed a new long-term contract at Upton Park on Wednesday morning.

The Hammers striker, who turned 25 on Monday, enjoyed the perfect birthday present when he put pen to paper on a new deal that will keep him at the Boleyn Ground until 2010, and is delighted to have pledged his future to the Club he has supported since childhood.

"I'm really pleased to have signed the new contract," says Barking-born Bobby. "West Ham is my club and I don't want to go anywhere else, so I'm more than happy to sign up for the next four and a half years.

"Most of the young players here have signed long-term deals and we can all see what the manager is trying to build. We've got a great bunch of lads here, and it's a happy place to be.

"I was chuffed when the Club offered me a new deal and now I'm just looking forward to the future at Upton Park."

Since signing for the Hammers in January 2004 as part of the deal that took Jermain Defoe to Tottenham Hotspur on the final day of the transfer window, Bobby has experienced a roller-coaster ride in the claret and blue.

After taking a while to adjust to the level of expectation surrounding West Ham United as a Championship outfit, he endured a rough ride at times. However, showing great character and resilience, the former Brighton hot-shot eventually came good, and earned himself hero status with the goal that sealed our return to the top flight in last May's Play-Off final at the Millennium Stadium.

"There have been some tough times since I arrived at the club," admits Bobby. "When we were in the Championship, the fans were often on edge and that sometimes transmitted to the players.

"In all honesty, no-one at the Club was ever really happy while we were outside of the Premiership, but all that frustration and pressure disappeared when we won promotion and I think it brought everyone closer together.

"When I look back at it, the whole of 2005 was a great year for me. From January onwards, things started to go well and I had a great finish to last season. It's gone on from there and everything is much more settled now.

"I've enjoyed this season, the team have made a great start and I've scored a few goals. A lot of people outside the Club wrote us off before the season started, but we always had belief in ourselves and thought we could prove our quality."

Having now committed his future to Hammers, Bobby will be hoping to play a key role in Alan Pardew's plan to develop the Club as a Premiership force to be reckoned with in the coming years, but he insists that the priority is a more short-term aim.

"There is a lot of ambition here, but we've got to take it one step at a time," says the former England under-21 international. "Our aim this season was just to stay in the Premiership, and that is still the case.

"Once we get to 40 points, then we can start looking upwards, but the main thing is that we are in the Premiership next year.

"We are building for the future, and that is why most of the lads here have signed long term contracts. Hopefully, within a couple of years, we can be competing for a place in Europe and challenging for trophies - that is what we all want."
