Reserves see off Fulham

The reserve team got back to winning ways on Tuesday night thanks to a 1-0 victory over Fulham at their Motspur Park training ground.

A classy seventh minute strike from young midfielder David Cowley was enough to secure the three points for Kevin Keen's side, who were searching for their first win since November.

Keen named another young side to take on the Cottagers, with Welsh pairing James Collins and Carl Fletcher the only recognised senior first-team squad members, while defender Darren Blewitt came in at left-back as a late change to the original line-up.

It was Blewitt who created Hammers' early winner, sending over a deep cross from the left that found Cowley, who chested down at the far post and volleyed a superb effort into the net from close range.

In a fairly even and close encounter, Fulham enjoyed their fair share of possession, and came close to equalising before the break with an effort that hit the post, while Stephen Bywater was forced into making a good save from a free-kick just outside the penalty area.

The second half followed much the same pattern, with both sides enjoying spells of dominance on an excellent playing surface, and Fletcher was unlucky not to extend the lead with a clever lob that cannoned back off the crossbar.

Hammers held on for the victory, though, leaving Kevin Keen pleased with an impressive all-round performance.

"It was a good test for us tonight," he said. "Fulham played their 4-3-3 formation and I thought we coped with it well. The attitude and effort was superb, and the two senior lads, Ginge and Fletch, were excellent.

"I don't like to single out players, but they gave us extra quality, and young Zavon Hines up front was also superb.

"The youngsters have played a lot of football recently but they gave their all again, and we just edged it to earn a deserved victory tonight."

Hammers: Bywater; Andrews, Tomkins, Collins, Blewitt; Cowley, Collison (Hales 70), Fletcher, Reid (Fitzgerald 85); Ephraim, Hines (Jeffrey 90). Subs unused: Kemal, Henry.
