TWO Hammers stars were honoured for their performances for Wales
this week as Danny Gabbidon was named Welsh Footballer of the Year
and James Collins named as Young Player of the Year.
The West Ham United duo received their awards at the Carling Welsh
Football Awards dinner held at Swansea's New Stadium.
Gabbidon scooped his prize for some outstanding performances at
international level, where he has missed just one of the last 18
games for Wales under John Toshack and previously Mark Hughes.
He was delighted with the award and admitted that he has been
pleased with his form this season for both club and country.
He said: "The Premier League has been tough, but I'm
really pleased with the way it has gone. I know I can do better
though and I'm looking to improve as the season continues.
"I'm delighted to win the award, but my aim is just to do
my best every time I go out and play for my country and hopefully I
can continue to do well for the international team.
"It is every footballer's dream to play in the Premiership
and also at the top level for your country. It's a fantastic
opportunity and I want to make the most of it."
Although Collins is yet to play for the Hammers in the Premier
League, his pedigree on the international stage is without
question. The 21-year-old has won eight senior caps for his country
so far and will be looking to increase that tally as Wales take on
Northern Ireland and Azerbaijan in World Cup qualifiers over the
next week.
Gabbidon is suspended for the game against Northern Ireland in
Belfast, but will be available for the clash with Azerbaijan.
