Hayden's Forward Thinking

DESPITE his disappointment in losing at Anfield, midfielder Hayden Mullins has been quick to put the set-back behind him, insisting the team must now concentrate on taking all three points at home to West Brom.

While a result against the European Champions would have been a massive achievement for the Hammers, Hayden explains that winning home games against close rivals like the Baggies is priority for West Ham United this season.

The midfielder confessed: "We were disappointed against Liverpool, but to be honest if we look at the game, we didn't create enough chances to trouble them.

"We've been very attack-minded all season, especially away from home but we couldn't get that going on Saturday and we didn't put them under enough pressure.

"It was a shame because we wanted to come away from Anfield with something, especially for the fans who were terrific again, but it just didn't happen.

"I'm sure we'll look at the game and work from it. Liverpool were a tough side to try and break down on their own ground and pressurised us from the start. We just couldn't get on top of them."

Despite not being able to pierce the stubborn Liverpool defence, Hayden admitted that with the game at 1-0 Hammers always had a chance of finding a way back into the match.

Hayden said: "When the game is so tight you always have to keep pressing. We just needed a little bit more, but we couldn't get on the ball enough and make it count in the right areas.

"They defended very well, but we were disappointed that we couldn't put them under more pressure."

Hayden was also disappointed that he didn't get to do battle with England midfielder Steven Gerrard, with the Liverpool skipper deployed in an unusual wide midfield role.

He added: "Because Steven was playing out wide more I didn't play that closely to him, so there wasn't the battle as such I was relishing.

"It would have been great to take something away from Anfield, but we've got to put that match behind us now and concentrate on what will be another massive test against West Brom.

"Our home form has been really strong so far this season and we've got to try and keep that going."

In West Ham United's comeback Premier League season, Hayden admits that every game represents a step on the learning curve of life back in the top-flight.

And the 26-year-old midfielder believes Hammers will take a lot away from their Anfield experience.

He said: "Games like the one at Liverpool are big tests for us and we'll learn from them.

"We'll be working hard in training as usual this week and go into the West Brom with one aim - to take maximum points.

"We've been doing well this season and a loss at a place like Anfield shouldn't disguise that. We'll go into our next game confident that we can win."
