THE Football League has written to its member clubs confirming that
it has been unable to secure any further concessions from FIFA over
the future implementation of transfer windows in its league
competition.
Despite campaigning strongly against FIFA's transfer
regulations for the last three seasons, The League has now been
notified by the world governing body that its dispensation from
transfer windows will not continue beyond the end of the season.
League officers have met with FIFA officials on a number of
occasions and have argued that the introduction of transfer windows
would place additional financial pressures on clubs that have
traditionally traded players to enable them to continue in
business.
Football League Head of Communications John Nagle said: "For
some time we have been seeking to persuade FIFA to continue our
dispensation to trade amongst ourselves on a year-round basis and
to allow us to trade, on the same basis, with Premier League clubs.
"Disappointingly we have been unable to secure any further
concessions and FIFA have now confirmed that revised rules
governing the Status and Transfer of Players were recently approved
by their Executive Committee, with the intention that these should
be applied universally next season."
In response, The League has established a working party of
experienced club officials to consider the potential implications
of these developments and formulate recommendations which will be
considered by clubs.
The matter will be discussed with clubs at the next meeting of all
clubs in March.
