Alan's Happy

Alan Pardew says he is more than happy with the current set of players at his disposal.

"I don't really feel we need to add to the squad," he explains.

"We have got some good players here and I think it is just a question of things kicking in a little bit up front.

"We know that, and the players whose job it is to contribute in that area need to score to stay in that team."

Explaining why he allowed Adam Nowland to go to Gillingham on loan, he adds:

"I just felt that with Steve Lomas coming back his chances would be limited to play so the thought is keep him playing.

"I thought he was coming into some of his best form for us and I want to keep that going."

Even without the presence of Adam, there is still a real battle for a midfield berth and Alan adds:

"Fletcher and Reo-Coker have been outstanding in the last few games so Steve finds himself on the side lines.

"Lomy is a key, key player for us who wants to play every game but at the moment Fletch and Nigel are doing very well for us and he is having to wait his turn - once his chance comes, though, you bet your life he will take it.

"I keep saying this league will be won by a squad and they are all going to get their chance, perhaps sooner than they think they are.

"Perhaps some on the sidelines are thinking 'how am I going to get in?' and suddenly the chance will appear.

"The important thing is that when it does come the player will have to take it because there is going to be pressure on."

Alan is desperate for a win to go with the recent good displays and he adds:

"Our performance was good and the only disappointing thing for us has been the collection of points - we need to get points on the board and in the last three games we haven't collected enough.

"We have to make sure we get a win on Saturday and put ourselves right back in the frame."

Alan reiterates his defence of Bobby Zamora in the aftermath of the Derby game and an accusation of stamping, and says:

"I haven't looked at it on the video but Bobby was just fired up and he wants to play, but he was frustrated that he hasn't had the chance yet.

"It was over-exuberance more than anything - Bobby hasn't got a malicious bone in his body, he is just a cheeky chappie and I don't need to pull him up on discipline.

"We wanted to get the Derby game out of our system quickly and although we didn't get the win it was a solid performance.

"The six minutes at Forest has possibly cost us the possibility of going top, and it is a harsh lesson because that is where we want to be.

"We have learnt from that and we will take it into Wolves because, make no mistake, this is going to be a tough, tough game.

"I feel we have been harshly treated by fate and that we deserve more out of the three performances we have just given.

"But we certainly need to get a win on the board.

"I am glad we had a midweek game to erase the loss at Forest and though we suffered a bit at the start of the game once we got that out of the way we got back to what we were all about and I thought we played some neat stuff - and deserved to win.

"If we had won at Forest we would be sitting in a nice position - we were devastated by that loss but we recovered well in the week and we are looking forward to the Wolves game.

"If we can get a victory together at the weekend it will be nice to take into the international break and then we can dust ourselves down for the next set of games."

Alan knows that after the Wolves game there will be two weeks without a game - followed by another intense period.

"It is a tight league and the glut of games is evening the league up; the games are coming in thick and fast and there is a lack of preparation and recovery time for players," he says.

"It is going to be difficult, of course it is, but we are under no illusions that for every game your focus has to be there and after this international week we play seven games in two weeks.

"It is a tough call on the clubs like ourselves that are carrying internationals."
