Chris On Signing

Chris Cohen is delighted and shocked to have signed a full professional contract - but knows there is a lot of hard work ahead to cement his right to be a permanent first team player.

The 17 year old, who has signed a deal for this year and the next three, admits:

"I wasn't expecting it to happen; it has come as a surprise, and it is obviously a good feeling."

Incredibly, Chris has played at every level for the club this season, and he adds:

"It is strange, because I thought I would just be playing for the U17s and U19s - so it is great.

"The hardest one to adjust to is probably from the reserves to the youth team, but you just do your best whichever team you play for.

"I wasn't sure if I would ever get to this stage, though obviously that is the aim and what you want."

Chris, who made his full debut as a substitute in the win over Sunderland in December, collecting a booking along the way, adds:

"I was thrown in to the first team because of injuries, and the manager gave me a chance, but you just have to take whatever comes.

"Hopefully I will get another go as quickly as possible."

Of that debut, he remembers:

"It is a bit of a blur; when you come on it is just the noise that hits you first and it was just good to get that one out of the way.

"It was quite daunting when I first went on but getting that game made it a bit easier the second time."

That second time was against Crewe recently; is it difficult playing under, as it were, different managers at different levels?

Not so, says Chris, who explains:

"We all work together and the other week when I came on for the first team I spoke to Kevin Keen and Tony Carr beforehand about what to do."

As to the future, Chris says:

"I know I am not going to play week in, week out - and I know there are going to be some ups and downs.

"I want to be involved in the first team but if not I will carry on at youth level and hopefully for the reserves.

"It might be another year before I get a chance again with all the players we have signed - so I know I have to be patient."

Left footer Chris can play in a variety of positions and he adds:

"My favourite position is centre midfield, where I have been playing recently, but I don't mind playing left back or left midfield - I do my best wherever I play."

Chris played for the U19s at the weekend after being pulled out of the England U17 squad last week.

That was as a precaution in case he was needed for first team duty - with the club having one or two injuries such as Matthew Etherington who, of course, did make it in the end to play against Gillingham.

He is optimistic about the first team's chances this term and concludes:

"I think the top two have gone a bit so that might be a struggle - but I am sure we will make the play-offs with room to spare."
