Shaun Says Goodbye

Shaun Byrne says he has served an invaluable apprenticeship at Upton Park - and hopes it stands him in good stead for the future.

As he looks at where his career will take him next, following his release in the summer, he reflects:

"I have played with some great players and have a lot of memories and good times from there; I have had a lot of good coaching as well, which has helped me along the way.

"Obviously I am sad I am leaving - but that is what happens in football, and it is time to move on.

"At my age it was difficult to break through, because we had a lot of good young players like Michael Carrick, Joe Cole, and Frank Lampard in front of you.

"I was lucky to stay at West Ham for as long as I did - seven years in total as a pro.

"I have been there since I was eight years old and some people are still there from then such as Stan Burke and Jimmy Frith.

"I have made a lot of friends behind the scenes as well but a lot of players my age have gone and are doing their own thing so now it is my turn.

"I have learnt from all the experienced players at the club and have played in different positions.

"Hopefully I have a lot more to learn and I can make a career out of it."

Shaun has not signed a contract elsewhere yet, and reveals:

"I am still talking to a few clubs and nothing is definite yet; we will wait and see.

"I doubt I will stay in division one, though; I think it will be too hard for me when I haven't been playing for West Ham - I just want to go where I get first team football.

"It will be strange not going to Chadwell Heath for pre-season especially after I had quite a good season for the reserves.

"When other players come in, though, you just know you have to get out and I have had an enjoyable time at Swansea on loan.

"I still think I could be at West Ham but it is about opinions; I still believe in my ability - if you don't, you will go nowhere - and I believe I just need a good run of games.

"If a manager is not having you, he is not having you, and I was doing as well as I could do."

Shaun will still be keeping an eye out for his old friends, though, and adds:

"I hope they bounce back because West Ham is a big club and it has been part of my life for ages so it will be a club I always remember - it will be the first result I look for in the papers."

Can his soon-to-be former side bounce back?

"It won't be easy, though, especially with the money situation, but they have the players to do it," he says.

More immediately, he is following the progress of ex-team mate Frank Lampard in Portugal and he adds:

"The way he has played this season Sven couldn't keep him out and with the goal against France he has already shown he will play a big part in the finals."
