Hammers Sign £11million Rebrov

West Ham United confirms the signing of former Tottenham Hotspur striker Sergei Rebrov on a free transfer.

The deal is subject to a work permit which the Club hope will be a formality because Rebrov is an established international.

The talented 31-year-old Ukrainian striker joined Spurs when their then manager George Graham paid £11million for him four years ago from Dynamo Kiev.

It was while with Dynamo that Sergei earned a reputation as one of the most dangerous strikers on the Continent, scoring 93 goals in 190 appearances for the club. He also scored 13 goals in 49 internationals for his country.

When Glenn Hoddle took over at Spurs, Sergei found his first-team opportunities limited and after scoring 10 goals in 59 appearances he joined Fenerbahce on loan.

Playing mostly in midfield for the Turkish giants, Sergei proved a huge influence on the side and helped them win their Championship last season and earn a place in the Champions League.

Returning to England during the summer, he was released by Spurs and was invited by Hammers manager Alan Pardew to join his former Spurs team-mate Teddy Sheringham for pre-training at West Ham.

"When Sergei became a free agent I thought with his reputation, record and skill we would be foolish not to have a look at him," said Pards. "It quickly became apparent that he had a feel for this Club and would be a great asset to the squad."

Although Sergei's signing will mean extra competition for a place in the team, newly arrived Teddy Sheringham welcomes him to the Hammers.

"He has looked very sharp and I know he can certainly score goals and create them," said Teddy.

Sergei was a great admirer of West Ham when he first arrived in London to join Spurs. "I knew all about the Club and enjoyed the way they played," he said. "Whenever I got the chance I watched West Ham on TV and at Upton Park. So, it was a tremendous moment for me when Alan Pardew invited me join the squad for pre-season training.

"Immediately I was impressed by the great atmosphere at Chadwell Heath and the way I was welcomed by the players and staff.

"I also liked the way Alan Pardew spoke to me about the team, his commitment and determination to bring success to the Club. I am obviously delighted to be here and I too have high expectations of helping to get the team back into the Premiership."
