Youths Triumph

West Ham overcame Chester-le-Street 2-0 at Upton Park in the FA Youth cup in front of a crowd of around 800 fans, and Tony Carr says it was a tricky tie.

On a bitterly cold evening, the turnout was impressive, and those who turned out to see the stars of the near future such as Chris Cohen and Mark Noble will also have noted the contribution of, amongst others, goalscorers Kyle Reid and Darren Blewitt, who scored in the 51st and 80th minutes.

"It was a tough examination, as I thought it would be, and they had forwards who broke quickly," says Tony.

"Overall, though, we were better, and Reid scored an excellent goal early in the second half which settled us down.

"It was a good all round display against good opposition who have had a fantastic adventure.

"They have played six ties and I said to their coach before the game I hope we play six because it will probably mean we have won it.

"They were a strong, tough, well organised team give who would give anyone a tough game.

"I'm grateful to the fans that turned out and let's hope we have a few more against Nottingham Forest."

Indeed, unlike the first team, the U18 side have been given a home draw for the next round.
