Keen On Draw

HAMMERS Reserve team coach Kevin Keen was delighted with his side's second-half performance as they came back from two goals down to snatch a 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur at Upton Park.

He said: "In the first-half we sat back off Spurs and gave them too much freedom to play, which they took advantage of. This was a very different Reserve team to what we normally put out and it took time for the players to settle down.

"I was disappointed with the defending on the first goal, when we allowed Yeates to cut across the penalty area and shoot, but the second was a very good move from them, although again I think those situations can always be defended better.

"I said a few words at half-time and brought on Trent McClenahan, who did extremely well for us. He showed a great attitude and really imposed himself on the game.

"In the second-half we competed much better and there was an edge to our game that had been missing throughout the first 45 minutes."

Kevin introduced striker Youssef Sofiane on 70 minutes and the Frenchman had an almost immediate effect, converting the penalty that pulled West Ham back into the game and adding some spark in attack.

Kevin added: "Youssef added a new dimension to our play when he came on and I was pleased with his performance. He played a major part in the build-up to the penalty and then scored it with a cool finish.

"He also had a hand in the second goal and brought a good save out of their goalkeeper late on.

"A point was a decent result for us after our first-half performance and credit to the players for the way they fought back in the second-half."

Defender Malky Mackay came through 80 minutes unscathed after his calf injury and even got on the scoresheet, heading West Ham's equaliser.

"It was good to see Malky Mackay back," said Kevin. "He looked solid and did well to head home the equaliser at the back post. Malky will now be available for the Christmas period, which will be a huge boost to the first-team squad.

"It was also good to see new signing Gavin Williams get his first run out in a Hammers shirt. He looked lively, had a hand in earning the penalty, and showed some clever touches.

"Goalkeeper Robert Burch, who is on loan from Spurs, also had a very encouraging first appearance for the Hammers. He looked very solid under pressure and made an excellent penalty save late on to earn us a point."
