Matt: We Must Improve

Matthew Etherington says the team must improve their performance at Crewe on Saturday - while Alan Pardew shares his view that there are no excuses for the defeat against Wigan.

"It was a bad day at the office; I don't think there is any particular reason, it was just a bad day," says Matthew candidly.

Is the fact that new players are still 'bedding in' something of a mitigation?

"Maybe, but I don't think you can use that as an excuse - we were poor," he admits.

"They are a good side and will be up there this year but they still shouldn't be beating us 3-1 at home."

As for the crowd reaction, he says:

"You can understand their frustration; we didn't play well and they are entitled to do what they feel. We have to make sure it doesn't happen again and it goes without saying that the gaffer wasn't happy.

"It is a tough game; they play good football up there but we have top go to those places and win."

Adds Alan:

"The crowd need to be inspired and we didn't give them a display to cheer - you have got to accept their disappointment and I can't defend a performance like that.

"It was simply not good enough - we lost battles all over the pitch and had no answer to their aerial power up front. The players have a responsibility to the West Ham public and that performance was simply not good enough - we lost rhythm and belief in each other.

"In the second half we had a couple of 'get out of jail' chances but I don't want to hide behind anything. There were some issues out there and we lacked passion and fight - that is always something the home crowd here wants to see.

"We need to play with some passion and pride for the West Ham badge and it will be there by the next game. If playing like that doesn't motivate the players to do much better in the next match then nothing ever will - we have some work to do.

"Right now my team need to puff out their chests and play with heart in the next game; if they think it will be any easier than today, then it won't be.

"Our fans were disappointed by what happened in the play-off final and were looking to be inspired by us this season.

"We were outplayed and Wigan fully deserved their victory; we just did not dominate."
