The Mighty Quinn

Paul Goddard reckons the acquisition of Wayne Quinn on a month long loan deal is just what the club needs - but insists that is no disrespect to Matthew Kilgallon.

Trevor Brooking secured left-back Wayne's short term services on Wednesday, and Paul says: "It is obviously a problem position since Rufus got injured and we needed a replacement."

But he is keen to point out that another loanee, Matthew, performed admirably in that position during the victory at Portman Road.

"Matthew Kilgallon did fantastically at Ipswich but that was a real shot in the dark for us.

"When we spoke to him and said 'we think we are going to have to play you there' he said 'I have never played there, even for Leeds reserves'.

"So it was a real gamble, Matt did great on the day, but we do need an experienced left back. Wayne gives us that and let's hope he can have an impact on the club.

"The squad is so small and Matthew is part of it. He is there if we need to use him in any way, but unfortunately he has had a bit of a thigh strain since the Ipswich game.

"He has just started training again, though, and has settled in very well - we are pleased with him."

Wayne was the preferred option from Newcastle ahead of Robbie Elliott and Paul adds:

"Both players are very experienced and it was a very close call. We seek advice from as many people as we can, and they are slightly different kinds of left back; we just felt maybe Wayne suited us a little bit better."

Wayne is a former England under-21 international and Paul adds: "Wayne was one of those lads that, when he broke into first team football, was very highly thought of and perhaps he hasn't quite reached where his potential was looking.

"But he is still young enough to turn that round. I am sure he will be looking on this as a great opportunity for him and we are looking forward to working with him - it is a starting position."

The signing of Wayne will be Trevor Brooking's one and only transfer as caretaker manager and Paul explains: "We are without a recognised manager at the moment and I think Trevor has been reluctant to do anything on the longer term because he wants the new manager to have the opportunity to put his own people in place."

Wayne will wear the number 14 shirt during his stay at Upton Park.
