Michael Doubtful For England

Michael Carrick admits he may have to pull out of forthcoming England under-21 duty as he continues his gradual return to fitness.

With international week - consisting of European Championship qualifierss against Macedonia and Portugal - coming up, he admits: "I am not sure what is happening with the England thing yet. I have got to sort it out and we will have to wait and see but I didn't feel fit at the end of the Ipswich game.

"I think I was named in the squad but the medical squad have been speaking with their team and trying to work something out to see what is best for both parties because it is going to be a busy time.

"I need to stay fit and I don't want to be playing too many games too soon and break down again.

"We will have to work something out and see how it goes. I am looking at both sides because I am desperate to play for England again, especially in a game of the calibre of Portugal at home, a big game.

"But your club pays your money and if they don't want you to go you have to respect their decision as well."

Michael's medium term goal, though, is to restore himself to the full England squad, and he says: "If I get back to my best I am confident I can be in and around the squad - if I am performing.

"But if I am not I am not going to be looked at so it is up to me really."

Michael knows that his next game in a West Ham shirt will almost certainly be under the 10th permanent boss of the club, and he adds: "That is the way it seems to be; we will just have to wait and see and it is a case of 'watch this space' I suppose.

"To be honest I am just thinking about getting myself fit now and whoever is the manager you have to get in his first eleven.

"But having played a couple of games I just want to stay fit and healthy for the future."

But does he think Trevor Brooking will change his mind?

"I don't know. I wouldn't have a clue - two wins is good and he might quit while he is ahead or carry on," he says.

"But at the end of the day it is up to him and we will just have to see what happens.

"I am not too fussed at the moment. We have got a couple of wins, everyone is on a high, and we are looking for promotion so whoever comes in has got to carry on the job."

Of Saturday's win, he says: "Ipswich is a big team in division one and they would expect to be going up this year, so to go there and get a win is good.

"We had a little wobble in the second half but if we had taken that third goal we could have cruised home.

"But it wasn't to be and we just defended in the last 15 minutes, so everyone is delighted."

Jermain Defoe is once more selected in the under-21s, and Michael adds: "Jermain popped up with a goal and could have had a couple more - that's Jermain, you know he is going to do that in this division especially and we are going to need a few more of those from him in the weeks to come.

"It was also a great finish from Conners and I thought the chance had gone when Mells had his shot saved.

"But it was a great volley and I was delighted to see it go in especially after half time to give us a lift and put a dampener on them.

"I was disappointed to concede like we always are but to come away with the three points means you can't complain."

With West Ham now in the all-important top six, Michael says: "We have got there and the hard part is staying there but we are confident we can go anywhere in this division and come out on the day with three points, so that is what we are looking to do every week.

"To get six points in a week and be part of that is a big boost for me."
