Trevor Brooking admits he is surprised that there were no firm bids for England goalkeeper David James in the summer - and is full of praise for his performances this season.

That, for instance, Arsenal chose to bring in Germany's number two rather than England's number one in the summer could be considered an interesting decision, and Trevor says:

"From his point of view we were pleased when he agreed to stay as he has done and also that sides, although they were looking for a goalkeeper, weren't sure whether to pay the sort of money needed to get him.

"They are probably now regretting that because he is proving as good as anyone and now we all hope he has a great game for England against Turkey because that will be the icing on the cake and will cement him as the number one England goalkeeper and will naturally help him through with us for the rest of the season.

"I think Sven said that as long as he was happy with his form he would pick him and he has been true to that.

"If he is near the top of the first division with us and not conceding many goals he can go into the match in a stronger frame of mind than if we were struggling as we were last year - not that we don't want to be there again next year, and not struggling if we can bounce back."

He concedes that he did not necessarily anticipate David still being at the club this campaign, adding:

"I suppose you have got to say yes, I am surprised; one or two were looking for goalkeepers and sometimes the fact that we didn't have a good defensive record ourselves could have reflected on David and he had a spell at times when he will admit he wasn't at his best either because confidence affects everyone.

"But we all know what he is able to achieve in goal when he is in the right frame of mind and playing his best there is no one better.

"We are getting the benefit of that now and the consistency factor is there; whether that was what brought in a question mark with other clubs I honestly don't know.

"In the end, in the situation we were in in the summer, we had to wait and see where we could generate the revenue we needed and as we know four players unfortunately went and that didn't include David James.

"And it didn't include Jermain Defoe or Michael Carrick either, although a lot of fans were disappointed with the four it did include.

"At the time, in the dilemma we were in, we were in the hands of fate about which players were bid for.

"In the end we emerged badly bruised - but now down and out.

"But with the players that are still here and with the ones that have come in we at least have worked ourselves into a situation where we will give it a very good go to try and bounce back."

David has conceded fewer goals than anyone else in the first division, and Trevor adds:

"Hopefully he is not quite as active in the first division!

"What we want to make sure is that he doesn't nod off when he is playing.

"And that hasn't happened because he has been a key player; in certain games he has been quieter than in others but he is the sort of goalkeeper that is a major plus for us.

"Any goals that the opposition get you really want to be earned; you don't want soft goals.

"I have seen on many of the division one round-ups where some goalkeepers have made errors and that sometimes makes the difference between a result.

"And I think with David playing the way he is at the moment you are going to make sides earn any point they get off us rather than being given one or two soft goals which make the difference.

"At the moment it is proving to be a major plus to have the England goalkeeper in our camp."
