Tc: J Hard Done By

Tony Cottee says he feels for Jermain Defoe following his red card on Saturday - and still thinks he is the man to shoot the Hammers into the Premiership.

"I have got a bit of sympathy for Jermain; to me he looks a little bit frustrated and it looked a frustrated tackle on Saturday," says TC.

"He had already received a yellow card, albeit a stupid one that I didn't agree with.

"But once you are on a yellow card you have got to be a little bit more sensible, shall we say, these days and I think any player seen to go to ground without even being touched still puts you at risk when you have slid across.

"I was giving my opinion on the game for Sky and I told the studio to come straight to me because I knew that he was going to get sent off.

"I didn't think it was a straight red but I am sure Jermain, who is still only a young player, will learn from it.

"I have been sent off in my career so I am not going to criticise too much."

There have, of course, been a lot of rumours recently about J - par for the course, as the club's most valuable asset - but Tony says:

"The crunch time is in January and I don't know what Alan Pardew's thoughts, or Jermain's, are - but I am sure they will have a chat and see if it is everyone's benefit for him to stay at the club.

"We don't want to lose one of our best players and certainly the player who can score us the goals to get us in the Premiership."

Tony is confident that West Ham will start to move up the table soon, and he adds:

"I think we are just missing a little bit of luck at the moment, and there isn't too much wrong.

"It will take Alan Pardew a little time to get his ideas across and in terms of the squad, yes, of course we need a few more players to bolster it.

"But there are a lot of clubs who would probably swap West Ham's squad for their squad so I think we are certainly in one of the better positions to get promoted.

"But you can talk as much as you like - you have to turn that into points and recently we have had three consecutive home draws followed by a home defeat and those nine points could be very costly at the end of the season.

"We hope, of course, that they are not."

If you are starved of live football this weekend, you can go and see the Boys of '86 take on a Thurrock XI on Sunday at 2 o'clock.

The game, at Thurrock's ground, will feature Billy Bonds as a guest of the Boys of '86.

A contribution from the gate will be made to the Bobby Moore Cancer Fund.
