Ciao Paolo

Trevor Brooking says that Paolo Di Canio and the club departed on good terms - and that he looks forward to bumping into him again at some stage in the future.

Despite stories of the so-called 'parting shot' variety last week, Trevor insists: "Paolo and I were fine and once he got over his gastric problem and was available for the last couple of games I said to him 'look, with the ability you have got I would like to use you at some stage whatever it may be' - and he was happy with that.

"There was not any problem with the training and the atmosphere. We left on good terms, I wished him well, he thanked me for involving him, and hopefully our paths will cross another time."

Paolo is, of course, as disappointed to have left as the fans were to have seen him go. He even said he would have played for the Hammers in the Conference - something that, incidentally, Rio Ferdinand said brother Anton would do as long as he gets a game! - but Trevor is at least pleased that, despite the club not avoiding relegation, Paolo at least had the opportunity to give the appropriate farewell his talents deserved.

"I was pleased Paolo had that last home game against Chelsea when he scored. It was in the script and he has had some great years and a big affinity with the fans because he is a flair player.

"We have always enjoyed flair players and he has given us some wonderful moments, and for him to go and have a good send-off was important.

"I think he deserved that and we wish him well. We don't know where he is going to end up, whether at a Premiership club or back in Italy, but that is something for him to resolve.

"He has some great memories with us and I am sure all the fans wish him well."
