Trevor: Hutch Can Be Happy

Trevor Brooking says he is unperturbed by quotes attributed to Don Hutchison saying that he would be interested in joining Glasgow Rangers - and says he could have a future at the club.

Don has been named, along with Christian Dailly, in the Scotland squad for the Euro 2004 qualifier with Germany at Hampden Park on Saturday, but is doubtful because of an ankle injury.

"He is back in the Scotland set-up now," says Trevor, "and got a knock in the Ireland game the week before.

"So he wasn't available for the New Zealand game, which wasn't the best, but everyone is building up to the home game with Germany.

"In the quotes I saw he mentioned he would like to get first team football and I could understand that; perhaps one or two of the Rangers lads, with the success they have had this year, have mentioned something to him.

"But I think Hutch is one of those that, depending on who moves on, could well be a regular anyway next year and should, I would have thought, contribute quite a few goals in division one if he is playing in his midfield role from there.

"It is one of those situations again, because everyone is looking at us thinking we are going to move some on, that anyone and everyone gets in the frame.

"It was Joe and Hutch the other day, Fredi got a mention as well, and it will be someone else next week; it is an issue that will rumble along but a lot of it is speculative stuff in the paper.

"But until you get a firm offer there is nothing really to discuss."

Don had a season that was more stop than start because of injury problems, but Trevor says:

"It is always tough when you are out for several months; it was just really match fitness but unfortunately for us he needed half a dozen games in the first team to get back to Premiership match fitness that you need.

"When he was becoming available in January, February time, we had brought three or four in from the shop window and we started a better run.

"So we had to stay with what we had, because we were starting to get a run together and picking up points - and Hutch was then stuck on the bench.

"Whatever you say you can't get your match fitness in training and reserve games - you need to play first team football.

"So he will want to have a good preseason, and then start off playing in the team to get his match fitness level to what he is comfortable with."
