Glenn's Wide Boy Search

Glenn Roeder reveals that finding a wide left player is his top priority at the moment.

"Without doubt, though we are looking at strikers, the absolute priority is wide left," he says.

Glenn had to play Richard Garcia in an unfamiliar role on the left against Atvidabergs on Tuesday and he adds:

"Now that we have lost Trevor Sinclair we haven't got any balance at all so we are doing everything we can to find a wide left player - and other positions.

"The number of seniors in the squad at the moment is wafer thin."

The second and final match of the Swedish tour takes place on Thursday evening and Glenn, explaining the team news, adds:

"Hopefully we haven't picked up too serious knocks but we are not taking any chances with Don Hutchison this evening; he has done ever so well this preseason and not only in training, but just as importantly, in the games he has played.

"He has already struck two goals against Bournemouth and he played his part the other night in what was a good win.

"But in the 70th minute he had a little bit of pain in his knee and we took him off - obviously Tuesday to Thursday doesn't give him too much chance for it to go away and so we won't take a chance with him tonight.

"By not doing that I expect him to be able to play against Wycombe next Tuesday.

"Anton Ferdinand is out here with us while Sebastien Schemmel isn't; he picked up a groin injury last weekend and had to pull out of training on Friday morning.

"He is being treated back at Chadwell Heath but I don't think it is that serious.

"It has given an opportunity for these young boys and Anton Ferdinand, to all intents and purposes, made his first team debut the other night even if it was a friendly.

"It was his first start in a first team game after playing about 30 minutes at Bournemouth last week.

"He did very well at right back though he will be like his brother, a central defender, I am sure about that - and one that plays many first team games.

"He is a very young player gaining experience all the time; I hope I am not in a position where I have to play too many of these young players week in week out before they are ready because that can be dangerous.

"It is very important that you get the timing right when you get young players in and when you take them out the team, and this is the case with Anton.

"We think he is one for the future, one to look forward to, but at the moment, in all honesty, he is probably not quite ready to start week in week out.

"But such is the smallness of the squad at the moment that I expect him to be involved throughout this season.

"He is getting another game tonight and this will be his toughest test; it is an opportunity and we will know more about Anton and others after this game."

Djurgardens will, feels Glenn, provide a stern test, and he adds:

"They are the champions of Sweden, they are in the qualifying stages of the Champions' League with a game in Belgrade next week; they are leading the Swedish league yet again and I watched them win 3-0 on Monday in the league.

"They are a very good team and we will certainly learn more about the youngsters come the end of the game than we know already.

"We are all looking forward to the game after a little bit of training on Thursday morning; we had lunch and are preparing for what is going to be an interesting game.

"Fredi Kanoute we have given 45 minutes to in the first two games and we hope for more tonight; having spent so much time out injured last year we are careful we don't overplay him in these games.

"They are all about a build up to Preston North End in a few weeks' time so it is not important that he is not playing 90 minutes.

"What is important is that he is staying fit.

"Jermain Defoe has pleased me with his attitude and the effort he is putting in in training and the games; he scored a couple of goals the other night and is up and running in terms of goals.

"He is a young striker that gets great satisfaction from hitting the back of the net - he lives by that."

Glenn also hopes that Youssef Sofiane will emerge this season, and he adds:

"The most important thing with Youssef is keeping him fit; last year he was hardly fit at all with nothing serious but nuisance muscle injuries that were stopping him completing 90 minutes.

"He would only ever be out for seven to 12 days but the thing was we never had him on the training ground and we never had an opportunity to coach him.

"I feel he does need work on the training ground and I still think he is going to be a useful acquisition for us; you could argue that now Trevor has gone he is the quickest player at the club.

"He is very very fast and that is probably half the trouble with these minor muscle injuries; he has got so much speed for a young lad before he is really fully developed.

"He had a half the other night and probably did as well as he has done since he has been at the club.

"He looked a real handful for their defence with the burst of speed he has got and when he runs on to the grass behind back fours, he causes defenders lots of problems.

"It was nice for him to get a goal on Tuesday and I am just hoping for him and us that he stays fit all year - because he can't afford to pick up these niggly injuries that stop us from being able to coach him at Chadwell Heath."
